Greg Johnson

Dr. Greg Johnson is an emerging force in the jazz world, known for a distinctive saxophone sound and compositional voice that moves fluidly across jazz, classical, and popular music. He has appeared in concert and on more than 40 recordings with legends such as Curtis Fuller, Billy Taylor, and Bob Mintzer, and has toured internationally with major pop and rock artists including Saint Motel, Robin Thicke, Barry Manilow, The Spinners, The O’Jays, and Jim Peterik. Currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at Sacramento State, he has also taught at USC, Marin School of the Arts, and CSU Stanislaus. Johnson has released ten albums as a leader and contributed to dozens more, with Philosopher’s Path and Visions of Kansas City earning recognition across six categories on the 2020 GRAMMY ballot. His work showcases a multifaceted musical vision—rich harmonies, dynamic improvisation, and subtle influences from classical and popular traditions—solidifying his reputation as a compelling and increasingly influential voice in contemporary jazz.
