Art Lande

Art Lande is a Grammy-nominated American jazz pianist, composer, improviser, drummer, and educator known for his deft melodicism, textural finesse, and boundary-pushing modal fluidity. Born in New York City in 1947, he began playing piano at age four, studied at Williams College, and later rose to prominence in the San Francisco jazz scene before forming his acclaimed quartet, Rubisa Patrol, in the 1970s and recording extensively for ECM Records. Throughout a career spanning decades, Lande has collaborated with numerous jazz luminaries—including Jan Garbarek, Steve Swallow, and Charlie Haden—while also establishing a prolific legacy as an innovative teacher and mentor across institutions in the United States and Europe.
